PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A driver accused of fleeing the scene after striking and injuring a Providence city councilman has been ordered held on $100,000 bail after turning herself in.

Twenty-two-year-old Tihani Melania Pichardo (Tih-HAH'-nee Mel-AH'-nee-ah Pih-CHAR'-doh) surrendered to state police on Thursday, accompanied by her lawyer. Police had been looking for her for days. She did not enter a plea Friday in Providence District Court.

Authorities say she struck Terrence Hassett last Friday night as the councilman was crossing Atwells Avenue in Providence's Federal Hill neighborhood. Witnesses said she stopped briefly, then drove away.

Hassett suffered head and leg injuries but is expected to survive.

The Democrat has been on the council since 1997.
