PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Providence city councilman has been severely hurt after being struck by a hit-and-run driver, but a city official says he's expected to survive.

Police say councilman Terrence Hassett was crossing a street to get to a pub at about 9 p.m. on Friday when he was hit by a car that kept going. Witnesses told police the car was a black Honda or Volkswagen driven by a woman with a woman passenger.

Councilman John Lombardi told The Providence Journal on Saturday that he's been in touch with Hassett's family and everything they're hearing about his condition is "very positive."

Hassett has represented Ward 12 on Smith Hill since 1997. The Democrat is unopposed for re-election this year and is the council majority leader.
