PORTSMOUTH, R.I.—The Coast Guard says a passing vessel rescued two people from the waters off Portsmouth after engine failure on their boat prompted them to jump overboard.

The pair was taken by the Coast Guard to a waiting ambulance and transported to Newport Hospital on Saturday.

Officials said the two jumped overboard at about 1:45 p.m., near Prudence Island. Coast Guard Ensign Gus Seyler said the two weren't in the water for long and there were no reports of serious injuries.

Two others on the disabled boat who did not jump overboard were taken off the vessel by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard said the state Department of Environmental Management was investigating why the 29-foot boat's engine failed.
