PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Health officials have recommended closing three Rhode Island beaches because of high bacteria counts that were likely caused by rain washing contamination into the water.

The state Department of Health advised Tuesday that swimmers stay out of Bristol Town Beach, Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick and Gorton Pond Beach in Warwick.

The department plans to continue monitoring water samples and announce when the water is safe.
