NH's Shaheen joins call for Freedom to Marry
CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is urging her Democratic party to include a freedom-to-marry plank in its 2012 election platform.
Shaheen--a longtime supporter of marriage equality-- is urging fellow party members to join the "Democrats: Say I Do" campaign launched earlier this month by the national Freedom to Marry organization.
New Hampshire became the 6th state to legalize marriage equality when it passed a law in January 2010 legalizing marriage between same-sex couples.
Since then, more than 2,000 couples have married in the Granite State.
The platform will be shaped at the party's national convention in September. The Freedom to Marry proposal calls for overturning the federal Defense of Marriage act and affirming the replacing with a Respect for Marriage act.
