NH power line project objects to part of land deal
CONCORD, N.H.—Officials with the Northern Pass power line project through New Hampshire's North Country want the state to reject part of a land conservation deal that would block it from building lines near the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel.
Northern Pass had offered $2.2 million for a right of way across 24 acres in Dixville Notch, but the hotel's owners accepted an $850,000 offer from the Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests that would protect 5,800 acres.
Northern Pass spokesman Martin Murray says project officials support the conservation effort, but the deal would block construction of transmission needed for the $1.2 billion hydropower line from Canada.
The state must approve the deal. The Concord Monitor (http://bit.ly/rxM8zG) says Northern Pass could sue if the state doesn't block the sale.
