Estrada was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis in his legs after years of sitting in his wheelchair. This bone scan shows the difference between Estrada's leg bone (at right) and that of a healthy man. Osteoporosis is a common but serious problem for paraplegics. Their bones can become so brittle, they can fracture during light activity, like moving from a wheelchair to a toilet. Bone fractures in paraplegics can lead to infection, amputation, and even death.
