Sen. Brown asks GOP to respect pro-choice views
BOSTON—Massachusetts Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is asking GOP leaders to be more inclusive on the issue of abortion.
In a letter sent Tuesday to Republican National Committee chairman Reince Preibus (ryns PREE'-bus), Brown says the party's platform should include concessions that respect the views of pro-choice Republicans like himself.
Brown said it would be a mistake for the GOP to adopt a platform that calls for a constitutional amendment banning abortion.
He added in the letter made public by his campaign that the party would be well-served if the platform recognized that someone can be "pro-choice and still be a good Republican."
Brown on Monday was among the first GOP lawmakers to call on Missouri Rep. Todd Akin to end his U.S. Senate campaign after claiming women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape."
