NEW BEDFORD, Mass.—The victim of a fatal crash on Route 140 in New Bedford has been identified as a popular student and top athlete at an area high school.

State police say 17-year-old Andrew McCann was killed in the accident Thursday morning as he was headed to school with friends. The driver of the car and another passenger were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

Officials at Greater New Bedford Vocational-Technical High School tell the Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/ApwTmE) that McCann was captain of the football and baseball teams and also ran track.

He was enrolled in the school's plumbing program and was headed to American International College to pursue a business management degree.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Police say McCann, in the back seat, was not wearing a seat belt.
