Academics turn minds to factories for a new era
MIT leads effort to reinvent field
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is leading a $500 million federal initiative to get academics, from engineers to economists, collaborating on new technologies that could reinvigorate American manufacturing and create jobs for millions out of work. Five other top universities have joined the effort, which seeks to develop new products and better ways to make old ones. But academia can not jumpstart manufacturing on its own. Political and economic change will also be needed, said participants at an MIT summit earlier this week.
