FDA warns Mass. stores on illegal tobacco sales
99 retailers told of penalties for selling to minors
The US Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that it has sent more than 1,200 warning letters to convenience stores, cafes, and other establishments nationwide that violated a federal law banning the sale of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products to minors. Ninety-nine retailers in Massachusetts received letters in the past few months warning them that financial penalties would ensue if they “continued to violate the law,’’ which prohibits the sale of such products to anyone under 18.
