BOSTON—A legislative committee has approved a proposed map of the state's nine new congressional districts.
The action by the Redistricting Committee paves the way for a final vote by Massachusetts House and Senate lawmakers Tuesday.
Once Gov. Deval Patrick signs the bill, the new districts will become law.
The map lumps two members of the state's all-Democratic delegation into a single district, while creating the state's first district where black, Hispanic and Asian-American voters are in the majority.
The map places U.S. Reps. Stephen Lynch of South Boston and William Keating of Quincy into a new district by pulling Quincy into the district currently represented by Lynch.
The map also redraws the lines of the district now represented by U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano of Somerville. The new district's minority population is nearly 57 percent.
