RI officials warn of botulism risk in herring

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island health officials are warning residents that a type of herring recalled by a Massachusetts company could be contaminated with the spore that causes botulism.

The Department of Health says it isn't known whether the salted, smoked split herring was sold in the state. But it was distributed in Massachusetts and Connecticut along with Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

Canadian Fish Exporters Inc. of Auburndale, Mass., recalled the fish after a routine sample from a New York retail location was found to have the fish organs still inside. Botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera of fish. The food-borne illness can be fatal.

The FDA said Wednesday no illnesses had been reported.
