BOSTON—Massachusetts state police have announced the death of a trooper who suffered severe brain injury in 2003 when a drunken driver slammed into her cruiser.
Police Colonel Marian McGovern said in a statement Wednesday that Trooper Ellen Engelhardt died following "traumatic and life-altering injuries" from the crash.
McGovern called Engelhardt a "valued colleague" and "a dear friend."
Witnesses told state police that 20-year-old William Senne was driving 90 miles per hour when he hit Engelhardt's cruiser in the breakdown lane of Route 25 in Wareham. The 22-year state police veteran had pulled over to examine guardrail damage.
Senne apologized in court for the crash, pleaded guilty to drunken driving and was sentenced in 2005 to 2 1/2 years in prison.
