SALEM, Mass.—Authorities say a 40-year-old Peabody man found hanged in a holding cell at Salem District Court likely killed himself.
Harley L. Sawyer was pronounced dead at Salem Hospital at 2:36 p.m. on Tuesday.
Essex District Attorney's spokesman Steve O'Connell says police and court officials are investigating, but no foul play is suspected.
Investigators think Sawyer used his own pants to hang himself.
Sawyer pleaded guilty to stealing from a gas station where he once worked, but was held when authorities discovered he was wanted in Texas on a probation violation.
His defense lawyer says Sawyer was resigned to returning to Texas but was concerned about losing his job and his house.
