BOSTON—A Wareham dentist accused of trading powerful prescription drugs for sexual favors is being detained on $50,000 bail.

A U.S. District magistrate on Wednesday ordered Steven Miller not to see any patients if he posts bail, surrender his passport and not to travel out of Massachusetts.

The 68-year-old pleaded not guilty Tuesday on charges of illegally distributing and dispensing pain relievers like Vicodin and Hydrocodone as well as depressants like Valium to people he was not treating.

Recipients included an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration officer posing as a boyfriend of a cooperating witness.

Authorities allege Miller dispensed powerful drugs more frequently and in larger quantities than normal.

Miller faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $1 million fine. He has surrendered his dental license.

Miller does not have an attorney.
