3-alarm fire guts tavern in Yarmouth
The Red Rose Inn, a Yarmouth inn and tavern, was destroyed last night by a three-alarm fire.
Neighbor Peter Cook said he spotted the blaze shortly after 7 p.m. Cook said he and his wife drove over to the inn to see what was going on, saw flames inside the structure, and called police.
“When we got there, it was pretty bad, and by the time the Fire Department got there, it was fully involved,’’ Cook said in a telephone interview last night.
“It was just out of control,’’ Cook said. “We saw the second story collapse completely.’’
Another local resident, Patrick Demko, said he also watched the inn burn.
“When I got there, I saw two firetrucks,’’ he said. “I’ve been coughing up smoke all night.’’
Demko and Cook said they were at the Red Rose just last night having drinks with the owner.
“It’s a devastating fire,’’ Demko said
Fire Department officials were at the scene and could not be reached for comment last night.
According to The Cape Cod Times, Yarmouth Fire Chief Michael Walker said there were no reported injuries in the blaze.
Cook said the inn reopened about a year ago, after extensive renovations, and was under new management.
Reached by phone last night, Red Rose owner Bob Galligan, who also owns a Best Western motel in Quincy, said he did not wish to comment.
