AMHERST, Mass.—The University of Massachusetts is celebrating the life and legacy of late music professor and marching band director George Parks.

Hundreds of band alumni are expected to attend a ceremony Saturday morning at the Mullins Center featuring a performance by the current band and testimonies from friends, colleagues and others including President Jack Wilson, Chancellor Robert Holub and state Sen. Stanley Rosenberg, a band alumnus.

The band and alumni are also scheduled to perform at Saturday's Homecoming football game against Richmond.

Parks died unexpectedly Sept. 16 after a performance at an Ohio high school as the band was on its way to perform at the UMass football game at Michigan.

The beloved Parks led the band to national prominence in his 33 years at the helm.
