Fans get no kick out of Menino flub
Who among us does not know the great moments in Boston sports history?
The mayor, it turns out.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino was on Causeway Street yesterday to honor a new statue of
Trying to put Orr’s goal in context, Menino, a self-described sports fan, cycled through other great athletic feats in Hub history: “Havlicek stole the ball; Fisk waving the ball fair; Flutie launching the Hail Mary pass; Varitek splitting the uprights.’’
What Menino meant to say, of course, was Vinatieri, as in Adam, the former
Needless to say, the sports fans who gathered for yesterday’s event did not take too kindly to Menino’s mistake. The estimated crowd of 500 people and assembled spectators grumbled after hearing the name of Jason Varitek, the longtime
Menino did not help his cause by also mispronouncing the word iconic. But that was a minor quibble to sports fans who thought the Varitek line missed the uprights.
