Grandfather sentenced in molest case

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- A 70-year-old North Stonington man was sentenced to 40 years in prison yesterday for molesting his three granddaughters.

Superior Court Judge Carmen Espinoza sentenced John Gregory to the prison time followed by five years of special parole, The Herald of New Britain reported.

Gregory was convicted in March of nine counts of sexual misconduct for inappropriately touching his son's three young daughters over a 10-year span. The victims' parents said they were satisfied with the sentence.

Gregory's 4-year-old granddaughter told her mother that her grandfather touched her inappropriately while she sat on his lap in September 2002, court records showed. A tape from a home security camera didn't reveal any misconduct involving the 4-year-old, but did show Gregory inappropriately touching her 22-month old sister. He also was convicted of touching an older sister, now 13.

Gregory told police that he touched several of his other granddaughters in incidents dating back to 1989. He did not define touching.
