Springfield bishop resigns from western Mass. diocese

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Springfield Bishop Thomas Dupre has resigned as head of the western Massachusetts diocese, the Vatican and the diocese said Wednesday.

The exact reason wasn't immediately known, but it comes about five years before the usual retirement age of 75. Dupre turned 70 in November, and has been head of the Springfield Diocese since May 1995.

The Vatican announced Wednesday that Pope John Paul II had accepted Dupre's resignation, but didn't release other details. The diocese confirmed his resignation but had no immediate comment.

In May, Dupre had said he was considering retiring due to ill health, specifically back and heart problems.

The Springfield Diocese encompasses the state's four western counties.
