Market Basket is ‘Creating Their Own Martyrs’

The recent management crisis at local Market Basket grocery stores that resulted in walkouts and firings has business experts criticizing the company’s executives.

Workers are protesting Market Basket’s firing of long-time CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, leading to empty store shelves and abandoned aisles.

Gary Chaison, a professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, said management then made the situation even worse by firing some of those employees. “Discharging workers who are supporting this action who have long seniority and clean work records, it’s going to look terrible for them,” Chaison said. “They’re creating their own martyrs.”

Richard Nicolazzo, Managing Partner at Boston communications firm Nicolazzo & Associates also told the Globe that store executives have mishandled the feud. Nicolazzo called the executives’ response “completely flat-footed.”

Former CEO Demoulas recently issued a statement on the matter, but many stores remain relatively barren as workers continue to protest.
