If you hear a loud bang this afternoon, don’t worry. It’s supposed to happen.
The National Guard will be holding a cannon and artillery salute, including the firing of ceremonial cannons, on the Boston Common between 12:30 and 1 p.m. today.
The ceremony is part of a June Day celebration held by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. According to a release on the Massachusetts National Guard’s Facebook page, the organization convenes on the first Monday every June to elect new officers and sergeants during a reenactment of their first election, held in 1638. The ceremonial gathering on the Common has been held uninterrupted in every year since then.
