The “Sleepwalker” statue at Wellesley College, which depicts a man walking in his underwear, has been splashed with yellow spray paint in what appears to be an act of vandalism, a college spokeswoman confirmed to The Boston Globe.
Wellesley spokeswoman Sue McGovern told the Globe that at least four spots on campus were tagged with the yellow paint.
The realistic-looking statue, which is part of an exhibit by sculptor Tony Matelli, started a controvery on campus in early February, leading some students to start a petition to have it removed. The petition said the statue could incite fear or trigger thoughts regarding sexual assault. A few weeks later, Wellesley president H. Kim Bottomly said that the statue would remain on campusthrough the spring.
