Residents affected by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s proposed fare increases will be able to air their opinions at a series of public hearings from April 16 to April 30 in Boston, Braintree, Lynn, Lowell, Newton, Framingham, Medford, and Attleboro. Managers at the T are seeking to raise fares by an average of 5 percent for subway, bus, and commuter rail trips effective July 1. Monthly subway and bus passes would increase from $70 to $75, and commuter rail monthly passes would increase by $5 to $17, depending on the distance traveled. A single ride with a Charlie Card on the subway would cost $2.10, and a ticket on the bus would cost $1.60. The board of directors of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation must vote to approve the proposed fare increases, probably in May, before the fares can go into effect. The hearing schedule can be found at mbta.com.
