A team from Sharon High School won the state Quizbowl championship April 5 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, according to Jose Libano, principal of the school. “It’s a great accomplishment,” he said in an interview. Sharon began participating in the Quizbowl about 4 years ago after first fielding a team for WGBH’s High School Quiz Show, according to Valerie Gundlah, coach of the Quizbowl team. During their second year of competition at WGBH, another coach told Gundlah about national quiz competition circuits, in which tournaments are usually held at universities, she said in an e-mail. Gundlah and her students went to a tournament and “pretty much were hooked on it after that,” she said. Questions cover academic subjects, current events, and pop culture. The Quizbowl is run by the Massachusetts Quizbowl Championship Association. To qualify for the final, Sharon was one of the top six finishers at a regional tournament March 8. The WGBH team is a now a subset of the overall 12-member Quizbowl team. In the WGBH competition, which is taped and aired later, an episode in which Sharon beat Hingham aired March 15, making Sharon the only school south of Boston to advance to the next round. The team’s game against Somerville is scheduled to air April 26 at 6 p.m. on WGBH 2.
