New Details Emerge in Jared Remy Jailhouse Fight

According to a criminal complaint issued on April 4 and made public today, Jared Remy used hot coffee, a plastic chair, and a bar of soap as weapons during an April 3 fight in the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge.

According to the criminal complaint, published online by WCVB, Remy threw hot coffee and a bar of soap at Jemery Hodges, another detainee in the jail’s overflow area. He then allegedly grabbed a plastic chair and hit Hodges five times, according to the complaint.

The criminal complaint goes on to say that Remy initially stopped the attack and dropped the chair, but then picked it up to take another swing at Hodges. Remy then allegedly followed the fleeing Hodges and started punching him before officers could separate the two men.

After the attack, Remy told officers he thought Hodges was a child molester and that he wanted to pick on a bigger detainee, according to the complaint.

“Remy stated that he picked on the biggest guy there because he didn’t want to seem like he was picking on anyone,” wrote Deputy Sheriff Matthew Doucot in the complaint.

According to the complaint, the attack resulted in two dime-sized burns to the victim’s face. In the document, Hodges said he had no idea why Remy would attack him and also said Remy used a homophobic slur during the attack.

Remy is scheduled for an April 24 arraignment on nine assault and battery charges stemming from the attack, according to the Boston Herald .

Remy’s attorney, Edward P. Ryan Jr. said Remy intends to plead not guilty to the new charges, The Boston Globe reports.

The complaint also mentioned a March 31 assault, when detainee Hector Sanchez attacked Remy. When asked about that previous attack, Remy said he thought Sanchez attacked him because he was rich and had been in the news, according to the report.

Remy is being held at the Cambridge jail, awaiting trial for the Aug. 15, 2013, murder of Jennifer Martel, who was stabbed to death in the couple’s Waltham apartment. Remy and Martel’s five-year-old daughter, Arianna, was home during the alleged murder. Jared Remy is the son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy.
