Kiyoshi Ota, a 91-year-old decorated War World II veteran, on Sunday received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the country. Ota, a purple heart recipient, was a sergeant in the US Army’s 442d Regimental Company L unit, which later merged with the 100th Battalion. The 442d Regimental Combat Team, an all-Japanese American unit, became one of the most decorated unit in US military history, according to federal records.
