From Newton Highlands to Brookline and Jamaica Plain, Barbara Kaplan invested time and her own money as a community activist, helping preserve institutions such as the Coolidge Corner Theatre and promoting affordable housing.
A former executive director of the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, Ms. Kaplan was convincing and persuasive when she encountered adversity or challenges, said Michael Gondek, who also had formerly served as the organization’s executive director.
She was “the kind of person who would shrug her shoulders, roll her eyes, and say, ‘We’ve got to keep going,’ ” said Gondek, who added that the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation would not have survived without her. “She was an incredible committed person.”
Ms. Kaplan died Dec. 10 in Massachusetts General Hospital. She was 79.
