Judge postpones trial of former probation commissioner John O’Brien

US District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV agreed Friday to postpone the long-awaited, high-profile trial of John J. O’Brien, the disgraced former probation commissioner accused of setting up a rigged hiring system to politically benefit his department. The trial, slated to start Feb. 24, was postponed to March 24. Saylor said he was reluctant to delay the trial, but agreed with defense lawyers who only recently received thousands of pages of evidence that they need more time to prepare.
