Amherst Regional High School was closed today after school officials discovered a social media post from a student saying that they had carried a firearm on school grounds.
“The student has been identified, and has been cooperative with investigators,” Amherst Police Lieutenant Ronald Young said today in a statement. “In the early stages of this case there have not been any criminal charges brought.”
Amherst police are investigating the post and closed the building as a precaution, according to a statement posted today on the school website.
“We’re hoping that the school will be open tomorrow, but we’re still awaiting word from the police,” said Kimberly Stender, a volunteer coordinator for the Amherst-Pelham regional school district.
Amherst School Superintendent Maria Geryk and Principal Mark Jackson will hold an information session in the Amherst Regional Middle School’s auditorium at 7 p.m. today for the public.
