Trooper, suspect in cruiser are rear-ended by alleged drunk driver in Leicester

A state trooper and a suspect in the back of his cruiser were injured early today in Leicester when the cruiser was rear-ended by a drunk driver, State Police said.

Jesse D’Amelio, 20, of Leicester, the driver of the 1999 Saturn sedan, was also injured. He faces arraignment today in East Brookfield District Court on charges of operating under the influence, drug possession, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

The crash occurred just before 3 a.m. today, almost immediately after Trooper Sergio Figueiredo arrested Heidi J. Rosario, 35, during a traffic stop, for an outstanding shoplifting warrant, State Police said.

Moments after Figueiredo placed Rosario in the back seat of his cruiser and sat down in the driver’s seat, D’Amelio’s car smashed into the cruiser, causing it to carom into Rosario’s parked 2006 Jeep Wrangler, State Police said.

All three were transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center’s Lakeside campus for treatment of minor injuries, and the two prisoners were released into State Police custody.

Rosario posted bail and is scheduled for a hearing Wednesday at East Brookfield District Court.
