An 80-year-old Hingham man was reunited with his family after he went missing briefly this morning, police said.

William Iakonelli wandered away from his home on Shipyard Drive at about 9 a.m. His at-home nurse called the police and asked them to search for him. He has Alzheimer’s disease, said Hingham Police Sergeant Steven Dearth.

Hingham police and firefighters, Weymouth police, and staff from Bridges by EPOCH, a Hingham assisted living center that specializes in memory loss, searched for Iakonelli, said Dearth.

His family was worried because he walks fast, said Dearth.

About an hour and a half later, Hingham police found Iakonelli safe near the South Shore Country Club on South Street, a few miles from his condominium. .Officers then returned him to his family.

“There was a really strong community effort,” said Dearth. “That led to this happy ending.”
