NEW BEDFORD -- Police on Wednesday night were investigating the deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were found inside a large three-decker home on Brock Avenue.

Investigators found the victims inside an apartment at 598 Brock Ave. shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Bristol district attorney’s office said in a statement.

Authorities did not identify the victims or give their ages, if they were known to each other, or if both lived in the unit. The pair was pronounced dead at the scene and the district attorney’s office labeled the deaths “a homicide.”

“The State Medical Examiner’s Office will take custody of the deceased and will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death,” the district attorney’s office said.

The office did not say how the two were killed, and a spokeswoman for District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter declined further comment.

“Since the investigation is active and ongoing, no further information can be disseminated about the case at this time,” said the statement from Sutter’s office. “If and when more information becomes available, this office will send out a follow up press release.”

State and New Bedford police were investigating at the scene under a thick fog late Wednesday as stunned neighbors came by to observe. Some said they heard the bodies had been lying in the apartment for days.

“That’s crazy,” said one city resident, who would only give his name as Mario.

Another man, who would only identify himself as Dave, said he lives in the apartment next to the unit where the victims were found.

He said that earlier on Wednesday he heard a commotion “that sounded to me like a fistfight,” but he later learned it was family members who discovered the bodies.

He said the victims were dating, but he did not know them well and was not sure if they both lived in the unit.

A woman who lives nearby, who declined to give even her first name, said the victims were “kids” in their 20s.

“I could be walking right past all this,” said the woman, who patronizes a bar next to the murder scene. “My God.”

Police officials at the scene were not available for comment.
