Small earthquake strikes near New Bedford

A 1.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the city Thursday, officials said. The quake was recorded by the Weston Observatory at 10:52 a.m., about 7 miles north of New Bedford. “People would have only felt it for two to three seconds at the most, and it’s well below the magnitude to have caused any damage,” said senior research scientist John Ebel. The New Bedford Fire Department received many calls from citizens concerned that there might have been an explosion nearby, said Chief Michael Gomes.
