The sounds echoed inside the gymnasium at Medfield High, a cacophony of squeaking and shuffling sneakers interspersed with shouts of “ball!” and “switch!”
The Medfield girls’ basketball team was working on its defense again, and the sounds were music to the ears of head coach Mark Nickerson.
“Pressure the ball,” he bellowed from the sideline. “Good! Good! Now score!”
The Warriors finished 26-2 and won the Division 2 state title last season on the back of its chaos-inducing defense. With nine of 12 players returning from that team, including four starters, they hope to hoist a championship plaque again at the end of this season using a similar formula.
“We really don’t spend a tremendous amount of time on set offenses and creating set offensive plays,” Nickerson explained.
