A 54-year-old Melrose man reported missing Tuesday night was found dead in the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus on Wednesday, authorities said.
The man’s car was found at the 640-acre state reservation around noon, and state and local police located his body around 12:30 p.m., Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office said.
The man’s dog, which he normally walks in the area, was found alive near his body, the DA’s office said. The dog was returned to the family.
The man’s name was not released. State Police spokesman David Procopio said the cause of death is unknown, pending an autopsy by the chief medical examiner.
The man was reported missing by his wife after he did not come home Tuesday night. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
State Police searched the reservation with their air wing helicopter, officers on foot, and officers on horse, Procopio said.
