As the drummer and lead singer of the garage band the Standells, Dick Dodd used his growling voice to turn “Dirty Water” into a classic song for Boston’s sports teams. With its iconic lyrics, “Well I love that dirty water. Oh, Boston, you’re my home,” the song has been played at Fenway Park since 1997, whenever the Red Sox win.
Mr. Dodd, a one-time Mouseketeer and member of the influential surfer band the Bel-Airs, died Friday at a Los Angeles area hospital. Mr. Dodd, who had disclosed on his website that he had cancer, was 68.
The Sox front office reached out to him before the 2004 World Series. On only a few hours notice, the Standells reunited and played the song at the second game.
