State Police close Route 128 in Woburn, summon helicopter to land on road after serious car crash

Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate one of three injured people from the crumpled wreckage of a single-car crash on Route 128 North in Woburn.

The back seat passenger, who was trapped for 20 minutes, was taken to an area hospital by a medical helicopter. The woman’s injuries were not considered life-threatening, State Police said.

The other passengers in the 2003 Honda Accord, a 34-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, both from East Boston, were taken by ambulance to the nearby Lahey Clinic with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The highway was closed by State Police following the crash, which happened around noon, to accomodate the helicopter landing on the road. After the helicopter took off, State Police opened the southbound lanes and two of the northbound lanes. The entire highway was reopened by 12:45 p.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
