Casey Grange recalls her first season as the varsity girls’ soccer coach at Central Catholic and her decision to insert a freshman defender into the starting lineup.
That promising first-year player, Stephanie May, displayed uncanny determination and selflessness in the Raiders’ run to the Division 1 state title in 2010.
And throughout her four seasons, she continued to have a major impact on the program.
“She’s definitely been the heart and soul of not just the defense, but the whole team,” said the 28-year-old coach.
It looked as if Central was bound for another state title this fall. The Raiders were untouchable in the regular season, outscoring foes 73-3, in an 18-0-0 slate.
But the perfect run was halted with a stunning 1-0 loss to Acton-Boxborough in the sectional semifinals.
