Town officials are working to resolve ongoing issues with Plum Island’s six-year-old, $22.9 million water and sewer system. In a regional meeting last month, Newburyport Mayor Donna Holaday said that investigations have been undertaken by the state inspector general’s office and the attorney general’s office, and that contractor Cambridge-based CDM Smith has acknowledged that corrosion was discovered at the sites of water main breaks that occurred in April 2011 and October 2012. The system was installed in 2007. Holaday said that CDM Smith had also agreed to do additional soil samples, and that officials hoped for an “adequate settlement” with the contractor.
