Because there was a shortage of coins during the Civil War, people hoarded whatever silver, copper, and nickel coins they could find and instead used stamps and government-issued currency to make change. Amateur Civil War historian Dana Zaiser of Norton will talk about "Money Alternatives of the Civil War" at the Dyer Library, 28 Centre Ave., Abington this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Anyone with any old coins, tokens, or medals that they think may be from the Civil War era are invited to bring them for Zaiser to take a look at.
