Margaret Sutermeister, a young woman in Milton in the 19th and early 20th century, was handy with a relatively new device called a camera. The History Room at the Milton Public Library is now displaying her work along with three historic maps of town. Like many women in the Victorian era, Sutermeister took to photography for artistic expression, according to Milton Historical Society spokeswoman Eleanor Fusoni. The photos are from 1894 to 1909, ending when Sutermeister’s father died and she had to take over his floral nursery business and take care of her mother. Sutermeister sought to capture everyone in Milton, and her subjects range from the wealthy to the working poor. For more information, call the Milton Public Library at 617-698-5757.
