Letter: College applicant deserved credit for creativity

This is a summary. To read the whole story subscribe to

I was disheartened by Andrew Flagel’s summary remarks (“Avoid fixating on getting into ‘perfect’ school,” Aug. 18) about the college applicant who described being tardy, which transitioned to delinquincy, and then into vandalism and at the end of the essay said “Just kidding.”

Mr. Flagel actually saw virtues beyond the strong writing; his colleague however did not.

What I like about the applicant’s tack is they did not play it safe. We so need this creative and outside-the-box thinking, especially in industry.

I agree that applicants should be respectful and put their best foot forward. However, it isn’t clear to me that the person’s creativity and strong writing skills were given due credit.
