South Boston man gets life in woman’s beating death

A South Boston man will serve a sentence of life without parole after he was convicted of beating 65-year-old Barbara Tagen to death with a metal baseball bat outside her Andrew Square apartment in August 2011, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said. Adam Cassino, 27, was linked to the bludgeoning after he was civilly commited to a drug abuse treatment center at Bridgewater State Hospital on Aug. 24, the day after the killing, and nurses spotted blood on his sneakers, prosecutors said. The blood on his sneakers and blood on a baseball bat found in the apartment Cassino had been staying in matched Tagen’s, and DNA on the bat’s handle matched Cassino’s, the district attorney said. A Suffolk Superior Court jury found Cassino guilty of first-degree murder July 23.
