For Brendan O’Connell, after a decade of painting in anonymity, the last few months have marked a change. In February, Susan Orlean profiled him in The New Yorker, leading to appearances on “The Colbert Report” and “CBS Sunday Morning.”

This week O’Connell allowed a glimpse into his process as part of a big-city tour he’s launched to draw attention to his latest venture,, an organization that aims to inspire creativity in children. This November, it plans to recruit more than a million kids to create a piece of art inspired by the word “gratitude.”

Leo DeSousa, a Walmart store manager, admitted that he was surprised when he got the call earlier this week from the corporate office. “It was certainly something new,” he said.
