Milford, Assabet Valley softball programs state their case as champions

On the afternoon of April 29, Milford High softball coach Brian Macchi gathered his players at their lowest point of the season and urged them not to forget the feeling.

The Scarlet Hawks had just lost to North Attleboro, 1-0, in 10 innings, the program’s first loss in 35 games, but he insisted they turn their despair over a perfect season lost into something more positive.

Milford (26-1) rolled off wins in its next 16 games, including a 1-0 victory in the Division 1 state championship game against Agawam last Saturday at Worcester State University to repeat as champions.

The Assabet Valley softball team finished a historic season with its 5-2 win over St. Mary’s of Lynn for the Division 3 state title — the school’s first in any team sport.
