Salem State University was recently recognized for its commitment to volunteerism, service learning, and civic engagement. The university was named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which the Corporation for National and Community Service awards annually to higher education institutions for their commitment to bettering their communities through service. Among the programs that led to the university’s selection is an initiative in which students from Lynn’s Ford Elementary School annually attend programs on Salem State’s campus that center on art, wellness, and computers. The recognition also stemmed from the 300 hours Salem State students and faculty spent last fall conducting a voter education and registration drive in Salem’s Point neighborhood, and a project by the university’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter to educate Salem children and their parents about the dangers of childhood obesity and the need for physical activity and healthy nutrition.
