A community group formed to restore and reopen the historic State Theatre downtown has signed a 20-year lease to operate it. Friends of the State Theatre president John Stagnone announced the lease signing last week with C&V Realty Investment Trust. Stagnone said the group hopes to restore the 1927 theater to its original glory and bring back movies, cultural arts, and local theatrical groups. Stagnone said he also hopes the restoration will help revitalize downtown Stoughton. “History has shown us how important cultural centers are to our economy and how surrounding businesses are spurred and thrive from each other,” said Stagnone, who will be stepping down as a selectman in April. The Friends of the State Theatre are completing the paperwork to become a nonprofit corporation, and will be applying for grants, and seeking support from foundations, businesses, and individuals. Those wishing to become part of the group or to donate can go to www.statetheatre.us.
