The local election scheduled for April 2 will feature a contested race for two seats on the Board of Selectmen. In all, five residents have been certified by the town clerk’s office as candidates: Incumbent Matthew J. Hanson of Littleton Road is seeking another three-year term as selectman and faces Town Meeting representative Roland A. Van Liew of Hemlock Drive, Planning Board member Robert P. Joyce of Turnpike Road, Permanent Building Committee chairman Patrick J. Maloney Sr. of Bello Lane, and School Committee chairwoman Janet L. Askenburg of Westford Street. Newcomer Louis G. Marino had pulled papers for the selectmen’s race but did not return his nomination papers, according to the town clerk’s office. There will also be a contested race for one seat as an associate member of the Planning Board: Jeff C. Apostolakes of Queen Street will compete for votes against incumbent Nancy K. Araway of Littleton Road. In the School Committee race, only two candidates are competing for two open seats: Incumbent Evelyn S. Thoren of Pinewood Road is running for reelection while Barbara J. Skaar of Overlook Drive, a former president of the Council of Chelmsford Schools, is seeking her first three-year term. Tienchia Jack Wang pulled papers for the School Committee race but did not return them by the Feb. 12 deadline. Meanwhile, incumbent Edmond N. Roux of Wiggin Street is seeking another three-year term as a full member of the Planning Board; Henry G. Parlee Jr. of Pine Hill Road is also a certified candidate in that race. Voters will also elect a constable, two library trustees, a housing authority member, and a member of the cemetery commission; those races are uncontested, with incumbents the only candidates. There is also only one candidate for a seat on the Board of Health: Town and school physician Eric P. Kaplan of Bartlett Street, a specialist in adolescent medicine with more than 35 years of experience in pediatric practice, is the only person seeking election to the three-year term.
